I fully second Roger's impressions. I just had the opportunity to see and
briefly operate one of these printers at MacWorld 2007 (with thanks to my
friends at Spectraflow), and I was won over.
A very remarkable piece of equipment, built with great care and impressive
attention to detail (as Mr. Michael Reichmann rightly states in his
informative review at <http://tinyurl.com/ynjylj>).
The results are excellent, both in color and in what may well be unsurpassed
black & white using non-custom inks (very neutral under just about all
common light conditions that I could test, and very smooth output even when
viewed very closely with my 60x pocket microscope).
Incidentally, the black & white output on this printer uses only the 3
non-chromatic inks -- unless a toning effect is requested--, whereas Epson's
Advanced Black & White option uses the black inks plus C, M & Y.
I've been an Epson fan for a long time, but, in my view, the introduction of
the HP Z-3100 represents a new stage in the game of inkjet output, and it
will now be up to Epson to match or surpass this HP printer.
And I do hope that they will take the challenge and amaze us.
