Dean,

It seems that the budget gods might finally smile enough to the extent that
my department can retire its Xerox Phaser 7700DN and purchase a new color
laser printer.

Good idea, there is some progress

You may recall that I've posted to this list in the past regarding issues
with the old 7700. These issues revolved mainly around the management's
reluctance to bring in a color management professional and get the unruly
printer under control. Apparently one of the managers has long held the
opinion that this particular Phaser 7700 is "a lemon" and that spending any
more money towards it is a waste.

Bad luck for the 7700. It is a great printer when calibrated and profiled with
PhaserMatch and an EyeOne.

While it's groovy to think of a new color laser printer rolling in the door,
I've been advised in the past by some CM specialists that simply dropping
the dollars on something new is no guarantee that we will be any better off
in terms of having a device that is reliable, consistent, or that can be
color managed.

That CM specialist is right - getting color right without some calibration and
CM skills is a lot of guessing and no controlled process. You should add
those to your shopping list for a new laser printer.

So I'd like to ask if anyone on this list has opinions regarding buying a
new color laser printer. As color management professionals, are there any
particular models that you have had good experiences with?

There are 4 ways to go for you:
- go inkjet: less color problems when you don't want to calibrate, but slow and expensive consumables
- go for an other laser or LED printer: almost the same trouble as with the 7700
- go for a color MFD: easy to calibrate, acceptable color out of the box for some applications, but little to no professional color tools
- go for a pro color copier: same like with the 7700 - you have to add training and CM skills to your list

At this point, we've had recommendations from our Xerox representative
regarding the Phaser 7400DX and the 7760DX. But are there any other
manufacturers or models that might be worth investigating?

Phaser 7400: more stable color without calibration, but less image quality
Phaser 7760: improved image quality, better color stability, faster, ability to handle heavy stock well
Xerox WorkCentre M24: used only, Color MFD
Xerox WorkCentre 7228: currently available in Europe only

If you consider to use a color MFD like those WorkCentres please check if their color quality matches your standards. They are no color proofing devices but give decent colors to the average user.

Karsten
