Interesting...
If you think of images (photos or such) you'll never encounter "K
only". The "preserve black" works exactly as I would expect it to work
because I was not thinking of K-only anywhere.
So the problem is the K of one of the profiles is not the same
(chroma, hue) as the K in the other; so CMY is introduced to
compensate.
I guess Alwan's LinkProfiler, Left Dakota's Link-O-Lator, and such
other specialized tools can build a DLP with this proper
characteristic. It seems Monaco doesn't...

I'm trying to determine the expected behavior of Monaco Profiler (v4.8) in
regards to preserving the black channel in device link profiles. A post on

"Because a link is
a more direct transform table, special functionality such as channel
preservation can be used. MonacoPROFILER has a "preserve black" option when
making link profiles that basically takes the black channel from the
original file and moves it to the destination. After that, it recomputes the
CMY to achieve proper color matching and tonality."
When converting an image from CMYK to CMYK using a DLP created in this way
with Profiler, the resulting image still contains CMYK in areas that were
originally K only however. What appears to happen is that 100% K transforms
to 100%K. However, as you move away from 100%K down the scale towards 0%K,
CMY inks gradually are introduced into K only elements. So a 90% K object
contains some hints of CMY, an 85% K object contains a little more CMY and
so on. The statement above would suggest that the whole range of K only
tones should transform to K only.
