Yes, HP has been the only printer manufacturer to ever include generic media types in their lists. There are certainly plenty of appropriate media types to choose from; you have to have some form of starting point, so it can determine matte or gloss black inks, starting densities, etc...

Also, can you execute that autocalibration without having to go
through the complete profiling process?

Yes, calibrate is a seperate function. I calibrate, then print my own profiling targets, and later, while I read my custom targets, I set the Z3100 to print and read its internal targets. Even with a handheld patch reader, I finish first, but its not really a race...
