Limited gamut does not mean unable to show subtle tones in a fine image, it
means not being able to show brilliant, saturated colors. I would worry more
about the fact that laptops actually work at 6, not 8, bits per channel,
reducing the number of actual available tones, even in gamut, and that the viewing
angle of laptops is intentionally narrow, to minimize the light they emit, to
save battery life. The low luminance of laptops used to be a problem for
matching to other monitors, at least in side-by-side situations, but thats improving
with newer models.
No one (at least no one in the know) expects top quality image reproduction
on a laptop, but for portability, a calibrated laptop beats no calibrated
screen at all.
