John,

I think the OP meant
fantastic in the sense of "outstanding" in how RAW Developer's rendering is
reminiscent of film, not "fantasy-like" or unreal.

Lorenzo,

Fantastic color rendering to me is precision (accuracy) and detail, not
oversaturated colors.

Mmm! The word 'fantastic' apparently comes from the Middle English 'fantastik' meaning 'imagined', and from the French word 'fantastique' meaning 'imagined', and from the Latin word 'phantasticus' meaning 'imaginery', and from the Greek word 'phantastikos' meaning 'able to create mental images'.

In current usage it apparently means (according to my dictionary):-

quaint or strange in form, conception or appearance
unrestrainably fanciful, extravagant
bizarre in form or appearance
strange
unreal
based on or existing only in fantasy

AND it can also mean:

wonderful, superb, or remarkable.

So I hope you can see why I interpreted it the way I did.

John,

In fact, comparing ACR's rendering to that of RD, sometimes the ACR result
seems unreal (as in color contrast & saturation more like Velvia than
Ektachrome)...

I've done some fairly accurate comparisons of images of ColorChecker shot with a D2x and D200, with the actual values of the ColorChecker as measured with an i1, and ACR 3.7 (default mode) beat all five color modes in Nikon Capture and NX for overall accuracy (average delta). Not compared any other raw developers though.

But I don't want 'fantastic' color!! I want the nearest we can get to

you get is 'fantastic' color to start with.
