Fine, you bank on Nikon and a proprietary and encrypted format. I'm not
about to do that.

But you are, aren't you? You are banking on the proprietary rendering of LR/ACR. That's not documented is it? ;) Nikon's raw data isn't encrypted is it - otherwise you wouldn't be able to copy it into dngs and use it in LR. Its only the rendering info in nef files that is proprietary; same as dngs with LR rendering info. All's fair in love, war, and business.
