Thanks for the responses...I'm aware of all the techniques mentioned. I've
been going back and forth between testing custom icc output profiles for
monochromatic output as well as the Advanced Black and White driver. Just
trying to find logical, rational- I guess "teachable" method.

printing- simply because, as we've said, there are numerous roads- most of
which lead through many proofs.
That needn't be the case. One problem might be exactly what you mention,
using color principles, or more possibly, traditional color management
principals. The somewhat confused, or disparate replies so far from
members of this knowledgeable color community may evidence that.
The fact is that there have been methods in place to manage gorgeous B&W
output for some time, including reliable soft proofing. But since they
were not introduced by Epson, Adobe, or another big gun here makes them
niche solutions. Frankly, that's a good thing, assuming they can thrive
and evolve.
