Is there any way to prevent this? From my viewpoint, the new instructions
should be used to rendering the image, but the instructions in the DNG file
should be left alone unless I explicitly told the software to save my new
settings into the file. Perhaps this should be an option or dialog box when
you click the "Open" button.

No, I'm not asking about the JPEG.

But the DNG "is" affected. The RAW data is left alone, but the new
instructions are written to the file, as you confirmed.

I understand this, but in building the new document it seem unusual to me
that the original instructions should be replaced without first being asked
if I want that.

For example, let's say I have a "baseline" set of instructions for
rendering. Now I want to try opening the file several times with a variety
of rendering settings. Every time I open the file, the new settings replace
the old settings and I no longer have a "baseline" embedded in the file.
Yes, I know I can save settings and apply them again, but why should I have
to if I already saved these settings in my DNG?

I've not used any of the other RAW interpreters. Is this a standard behavior
or is it unique to Photoshop?
