Rich,
I hear you. And as I said, "I would love to be able to print in the
US".
There is more wrong with this scenario than just sending a job
overseas
though. And certainly a much deeper subject than can be discussed
here. But
it most certainly is not as simple as "Rah, Rah, Buy USA". Are we
supposed
to ignore Mercedes, BMW, and Toyota and buy a piece of crap plastic
Ford or
Chrysler just because they are made here? Who makes the better car?
The
issue of printing overseas goes WAY beyond just price. They are in
step with
westerners with nearly every technological advancement in the
industry and
in nearly every instance able to match or exceed the quality here
in the
U.S., AND do it for less money. We should try to LEARN from them, not
dismiss them or be angry about it. I really honestly wish Ford
could make a
car that would drive and last like a comparably sized and priced
Toyota, but
they don't. I buy US made products whenever it makes sense to me.
But when
it comes to Camera's, automobiles, printing, etc...I'm looking for
the best
product for the money. Sorry. It's not just me. It's what's wrong
(?) with
the world and perhaps with this country.

Well, I can't effect the quality of auto manufacture, steel, semi-
conductors, tv's, shoes, pigments, food additives (that one scares
me), et cetera. I work in print.
Something that gets me, while US companies are moving manufacturing
overseas, Japanese and Korean auto makers are expanding manufacturing
and assembly in the states. I'm not an isolationist, but Soichiro
Honda himself said, "We must manufacture where we sell," or something
very close to it.
Somewhere there is a cost for the savings you reap - you just have to
look long and hard enough. You can't just - poof - make value.
I never had to perform maintenance on a book or replace it when it
hit 100,000 pages turned. The quality argument doesn't really hold
water in print - it's just profit pure and simple.
