Jon,
I agree with you wholeheartedly. There IS a place for U.S. printers to fit
in. But at least for now, it will be a very specific "niche" market as you
point out. Of course if timing and delivery is critical, that too eliminates
any possibility of printing overseas. And furthermore the tax structure is
changing in China so that paper will not be such a bargain anymore (more on
that if anyone is interested). And of course prices there continue to rise
every year. So who knows, we may get some of the mainstream business back
here before too long too.
Even though I have been printing overseas for many years, we still have
something here that they have been unable to match consistently
overseas...good communications! Often times WE know what we want, but can't
seem to get the idea across to the Asian manufacturers. That's why for
extreme high end printing, this is still the place to be.

We are a very high end printer and I can tell you that it has fast become a
niche market. High end corporate clients are willing to pay for US produced
printing but they will demand unconditional satisfaction with their orders.
Most commercial printers are unwilling to put forth the budget to provide
clients with this kind of product and service because of fear of loss.
The business is out there and we are seeing growth in that sector of the
business.
There is hope because of the people who put patriotism above the almighty
dollar.
