In my own opinion, Graeme, there is a user side and a technology /
manufacturer's side to the tools we use in our work. My natural inclination
is to side with the user, because I'm one too.
It's the user who buys, not the manufacturer. The user shouldn't be required
to hold a Ph.D. in color science in order just to operate a measuring
instrument. Some users may be color scientists, others just hired help on
hand to do some needed work. And then there's the whole range in between.
There are many levels of use for these measuring instruments. Some people
may view the use of anything other than the strictly and terminologically
correct nomenclature on the instrument as a step down a slippery slope. But
if all that the user *needs* to know is that the measurement has to be made
with the UV filter on, is it really necessary to force the user instead to
perform mental acrobatics for the sake of preserving "good U/I design"? If
it's not good for the user, whom is good for?
Faced with a choice of "UV Filter ON" or "UV Filter OFF", would the user who
is also a color scientist really stop to criticize the "poor" terminology,
or would he just proceed more or less unfazed with the measurements after a
cursory look at the instrument?
