Printer gamuts and monitor/RGB gamuts are quite different in shape and
extent. For the most part a monitor/RGB gamut is outside the boundaries of
a typical printer gamut, but not in all regions, especially in the
Green/Cyan part of color space. The challenge in building an input RGB
profile which utilizes the PRMG is to morph the RGB shape to the
printer-like shape of the PRMG. If this is done well (and HP/Fuji has done
a good job of it), then even if you pair this V4 source RGB profile with a
V2 output profile you should at least get better (more saturated) color
rendering in the Green/Cyan region as well as other parts as well. Bottom
line is that morphing an RGB gamut to a printer-like gamut should do a
better job at color than just sending the raw RGB gamut to the printer.
As Graeme has pointed out, optimal printer results using the PRMG can only
be achieved when the destination printer profile was built with the PRMG.
There the challenge is to morph the printer gamut to the PRMG, which is a
less onerous task than morphing an RGB gamut to it. However, as far as I
know, no one has done this yet.
I agree that building an output profile with a known input space (RGB
profile) in mind would yield the best results (essentially a Device Link),
but this is contrary to the open systems philosophy of the ICC. In
principle the PRMG is a way of improving quality while maintaining the
ability to handle data from diverse sources.
