So the disconnect at this point is the lack of working space profiles in v4
format with the PRMG tag? Are we any closer to seeing this (and who's doing
this work, the ICC)?
To a degree. The claim is that the PRMG is "printer like", so if
a range of typical RGB source spaces come with gamut mapping
to this printer like space, then the overall transform from the
RGB to printer profiles it's linked to will be improved. It's a sort
of half way to real gamut mapping, but the best that can be achieved
within the "dumb" linking paradigm.
When the rubber meets the road, what can an end user expect to see that
improves these results? It almost sounds like its a good idea on paper but
I'm wondering what we'd see if a sample of images where converted and output
using this new process and the old. I understand the results could be
anywhere from 'night and day' to 'so subtle, no one would notice.'
HP have had some samples if you happen to be at the right place,
at the right time :-) It is all still being finalized though,
and I guess may start to roll out this year.
So where does that put us with respect to the advantages of this new
technology which is supposed to reduce ambiguity? Seems like a baby step if
that.
Ultimately you hit the limitations of "dumb" linking, and have to
either put up with that, or move to "smarter" linking so that
actual source to destination gamut mapping can occur. Argyll
and WCS are examples of such systems.
