A wide gamut display is more likely to use separate R, G & B LEDs, since LEDs are close to being monochromatic sources, and hence enclose a bigger gamut triangle. A "white" LED typically has a broadband response from the phosphor with a peak in the blue, making a wide gamut display a challenge.
