The technology is input centric so that 16 bit/channel and 32 bit/
channel images can be displayed quite accurately.
A lot of CGI applications including automotive compositing,
advertising, and feature film effects are making use of this today.
One might expect that the black point index (as Chris points out) may
drive the print and repro markets in this direction sometime soon.
While we don't need the contrast, we certainly can use better shadow
definition from flat panels. Watch for Eizo and others to introduce
follow-on technology.
