The problem is this: When I achieve a visual match between transparency and
screen (and I AM able to achieve this match), I am matching the transparency
when viewed in non-standard conditions. In other words, the transparency
looks VERY dark and more importantly, so does the image on my screen that
matches it! For the transparency, this is fine because I can always crank up
my light box again to view it normally. But now I am left with an image on
my screen that is far too dark and does not even closely resemble the
appearance of the transparency under normal conditions (1270 cd/m^2).
It seems to me that you might be confusing two different proofing
situations. One is where you are looking for a side by side
match. In this situation your only practical approach seems to
be to reduce the brightness of the lightbox, and put up with the
darkening of both images. Given that you can refer back and
forward to the original, this may be satisfactory.
If you are subjective proofing in isolation on the display, then you
really want an appearance modelled view on the display of what the
transparency is expected to look like at the higher illumination
level.
Short of an HDR display capable of reaching the same illumination
levels as the transparency viewer, there doesn't seem any other way
of combining these two different situations.
