Re: Lightbox - Screen Matches
Re: Lightbox - Screen Matches
When trying to produce the look and feel of a monitor to hard copy
match, one typically keys in on memory colors.
That is, how do the
Grays
Reds
Greens
Blues
Cyans
Magentas
Yellows
compare?
Drum scanner operators know (some in past tense), that the decision
making tree required first setting end points (Dmax/Dmin)
- which equates to contrast range of a display or viewing booth
Neutralizing cast
- which equates to white point and contrast
And then correcting local color issues
- which is covered by ICC profiling in today's world
The first 2 items are calibration issues. Without the calibration,
one can not use the profile built upon it.
The same is true of the display and light box concept. If the
brightness equivalent of the 2 sources is not similar, the resulting
softproof on the display will not correspond.
basICColor display is working with lightbox manufacturers to drive
intelligent lightboxes via USB in the same way that it can drive
intelligent monitors via DDC. This closes the loop for most users.
In Ken's scenario, one might not want to softproof the transparency
at 120 cd/m2 or even at 300 cd/m2, but rather in HDR at 1200 cd/m2.
I believe that this can be done, if one has deep pockets. At last
check the HDR displays had been priced over $25,000. With the Dolby
connection, one might expect to see more affordable solutions.
