preserving black is the option you would want least in a proofing
workflow.
why? (i'm assuming that preserving black is equivalent to preserve
clean k channel in colorthink pro)

Hi Lorenzo,
preserving black is the option you would want least in a proofing
workflow. There are other options in a device linker, which can be
useful, like GCR or a late black start.
But the main advantage is to avoid rounding and interpolation
errors in the CMM, because a device link is a direct CMYK to CMYK
table without a PCS in between. This is the reason why RIPs like
GMG are so popular amongst high-end repros. Device links have the
same level of accuracy, while being fully ICC-compliant.
In a couple of days we will have more information about DeviL, our
new Devi(ce)L(inker) on our website www.basiccolor.de.

Hi,
I'm planning to use device-link profiles in a proof environment
using an Epson 3800 and Colorburst. I visited some websites and I
only found 2-page PDF brochures about the device-link softwares.
Besides the usual black-to-black mapping, what features a device-
link tool are welcome in a proof environment ? Which kind of
control in black-to-black mapping or other settings are desirable ?
Best regards,
Lorenzo
