How to profile a projector

I often have to use a projector/beamer in my work, which most often
results in horrible colors. In particular, some colors become almost
indistinguishable which can make a graph with lines in different
colors almost unreadable. I know that with low quality projectors
things will never look nice but if I could profile (and maybe even
calibrate) a projector, I could at least softproof my work and verify
how bad it will look.
What calibration devices could be used for this? I could try to hold
a normal monitor calibration device close to the projection screen
and hope it will capture the colors from the test patch.
Any ideas? Has anybody profiled and calibrated a projector already?
Markus
