"Anybody got a free-standing copy of Acrobat 8? Does the Color
> Management tab of Preferences have a place to specify a Rendering
> Intent?"

There's a checkbox for "Output intent overrides working spaces" but nothing referring directly to Rendering Intent. If this box goes unchecked (not the default) the Description then reads: "If the PDF document includes an Output Intent profile, allow the Output Intent to override the Document Working space when viewing and during printing."

From the Help viewer, I get the impression both the stand-alone version and the CS-included version work the same:

"Document Rendering Intent Choose a method to map colors between color spaces. The result of any particular method depends on the profiles of the color spaces. For example, some profiles produce identical results with different methods. Acrobat shares four rendering intents (Perceptual, Saturation, Relative Colorimetric, and Absolute Colorimetric) with other Creative Suite applications. For descriptions of these rendering intents, see About rendering
intents. Acrobat also includes a rendering intent called Preserve, which indicates that the intent is specified in the output device rather than in the PDF. In many output devices, Relative Colorimetric is the default intent."
