Richard,
We have used Wasatch Softrip for several years, upgrading as we go. We
run multiple printers (HP5500UV) off of each of our 4 versions of the
software. The GUI allows you to set something up, and let multiple
shifts of production folks run the printers, or high end color users, as
well.
As for control, this printer will allow you to make linearizations and
set ink limits, and gives you all the knobs of the others on the market,
but I have found that the onboard media profiles by HP are better than
anything one can make externally.
Externally driving a printhead, you can alter the head speed, number of
passes, linearization...pretty basic stuff. The manufacturer can
control MANY more things that are much more important to the way the
dots lie, are shaped, and etc.
As for color control, color calibrate in the morning, create your ICC
profile, and then print. Any "profile manipulation" is just trying to
do a better job fitting a 33x33x33 matrix than the math can do...IMHO.
