David,
To my knowledge, you will want to profile any inkjet printer as RGB, since
that is the data the printer works from, NOT CMYK.
I know that to more easily develop profiles for use with the StudioPrint
RIP, you will need their optional add on called "ColorGPS". It is in this
program add on that you can perform linearization, etc...
I have worked with Peter Supry and Eddie (last name?) and both are extremely
knowledgeable and helpful in walking you through the process. They can be
reached at (603) 882-0248.
Hope this helps.
Bob

Subject: StudioPrint and Monaco Profiler
I need some tips please if anyone can help. I have an Epson 9800 with
the Ultrachrome 3 ink set. I want to start using the RIP, StudioPrint
(v12.0.4), instead of the printer driver on my Mac. I have Monaco
Profiler 4.8 for making my profiles.
1) Should I profile as RGB or CMYK? I presume CMYK for the added
features of black generation.
2) How do I handle linearization, Density Control In StudioPrint or
Monaco Linearize?
3) If using Density Control in StudioPrint first and then using the
linearization feature in Monaco, is this doing a linearization on top
of another linearization?
4) Are there some hidden color settings that can get applied to my
patches in StudioPrint that I need to disable? Currently when I make
a new job and place my patches, I then need to select the ICC tab and
set it to none. It seems to always assign a profile even if I tell it
not to assume a profile.
5) StudioPrint seems to use the Epson Windows Driver for spooling no
matter what setting is chosen. Does StudioPrint override everything
in the Epson Windows Driver when it spools the job?
Currently I am unhappy with the match between using the Mac printer
driver, which to me is an excellent match, and my profile made for
StudioPrint, which is a little too contrasty with slightly plugged
shadows and an overall magenta cast. The transitions from full
shadows in to 3/4 tones is also a bit harsh with StudioPrint. There
is more of an edge where the Mac driver is smoother in that regard.
I need both methods to match as we have an extensive archive of
previous jobs that have already been dialed in as finals. Currently I
would not be able to use StudioPrint as the color and contrast is wrong.
Thank you,
David Wollmann
