Mike,
There are no requirements to use absolute differences in
CIE94 and CMC. However, since Delta L, Delta C and Delta H
are squared, it does not make a difference.
But to make things more difficult (!), CIE94 can be used
either in Reference/Sample or No-Reference modes, which
changes how C*ref is computed. In the Reference/Sample
mode, the computed value will be different when you swap
the Reference and Sample. In the other mode, neither patch
is a reference and C*ref is the geometric average.
In CMC, there is one term of the "T" variable which
requires an absolute computation.
You can refer to the BabelColor CT&A Help manual which
details these equation (look for the Delta E section):
