Mike,
The data sets such as the one by Sharma, that was given in
a previous response, are designed to "challenge" a formula
implementation and, as such, can be considered "proof of
compliance".
I only know that, when I enter these values in PatchTool,
the output is the same as the ones given in the reference
data set. I also know that PatchTool, MeasureTool, Bruce,
Graeme all give the same answer for data pair you gave
(Note: I only verified compliance with PatchTool !).
It is not a matter of "everybody else uses it", since
these programs were done independantly. If the formula
requires an absolute value, it should be used; if it does
not, there is NO reason to introduce one. If the formula
changes because a problem was found with it or someone
found a better implementation (this is an ongoing
process), then we will adapt to it.
Regards,
Danny Pascale

ColorThink Pro, Bruce's website, and apparently the rest
of the color
world use the raw value. This would make a difference
when encountering
a negative integer. Comparing two data sets (it8/7.4)
and calculating
the dE 2000 using both formula results in a different
value for about
30% of the patches, though most differences are very
small, and this
would likely depend on the data I suppose. I'm
wondering if anyone out
there has comments / opinions as to which formula is
more technically
correct ...and not necessarily just because everybody
else uses it. ;)
