It is not really clear yet, what the specifics of this question is all
about. So, let me put this idea out.
I guess one can take the minimalist point of view that you should be able to
use core printer technology without a RIP, that's an ok position, but all
printers and processes drift. Some more than others.
If the comments are about Epson' being better than HPs, sure we all know
that HP drift more than Epsons, especially the older HPs. I am not sure
the verdict is in yet on the new breed of HPs.
However, most everyone with color imaging experinece agrees with the best
practice of having a calibration and recalibration routine (of some type)
for a color printer. Recalibration is a positive thing.
And when I referr to some type of recalibration process, I mean some
end-users might be creating new profiles to correct for drift.
In either case, if you want good repeatable results it is logical to get a
RIP with a calibration and recalibration features.
