Anyone with an HP Z-series printer care to comment on frequency of
calibration/consumables costs?
I just installed an HP Z6100 + GMG last week and was mightily
impressed with how the auto-calibration was implemented. You can set
the auto-cal frequency in terms of days, what time it should be
performed, how long to let it dry before measuring and the max number
of iterations it will go through until it cries "uncle!". I was there
long enough to see it perform two auto-cals at 6am every day (one of
them had to be iterated). Since it leaves the results window up on
the screen for you, you could simply stretch out the interval until
you start seeing it need to iterate the calibration a couple of times
and then tighten up the interval a bit.
Somebody mentioned the additional cost the on-board spectro adds to
the printer. In the case of the HPs, it only adds a few hundred bucks
to the cost of the printer if you compare the cost to an equivalent
Epson. It's like getting a $5,000 iSis for less than the cost of an
Eye-One Pro. Pretty good deal in my book. Only downsides are it's
relatively slow (OK for a 500 patch calibration target but a bit
pokey for a 1,500+ patch profiling chart) and it's not available for
measuring anything that didn't come off the printer itself.
As far as consumable cost, all I can tell you is that on this 42"
Z6100 it used about a foot of paper (the calibration chart patches
are HUGE). It would use a bit more paper length on the smaller
printers. Depending on your paper, I would guess between $3-6 per
calibration, assuming no iterations.
Personally, I think HP has a real winner on their hands with these
new printers.
