From a practical point of view, keeping multiple proofers to the
standard you mention on a daily basis IS possible, but requires a

numbers on the day I perform the service, but when I turn my back...
But here's exactly the crunch: On the HP Z printers (with a GMG rip
at least) it doesn't require ANY degree of intervention or knowhow.
Once the system is set up, it's fully automated. I've installed
around 40 of the HP Z printers most of which is using GMG and we
routinely hit an average dE of less than 0.5 and a peak in the
1.1-1.3 area on GMG printer to printer (or printer to the standard
printer calibration MX3 profile really). Fully automated.
This translates to around 0,9-1.3 Average deviation from Fogra
39/28/29 with a max. deviation of around 2-3 measured with an Eye one
(several really and have also checked with a newly calibrated
spectrolino) on a Fogra media wedge. PRimary colors rarely deviate
more than dE of 2.
Yes changing paper/ink/humidity/temperature will all make printers
change a bit this way or that, this is where the automated
calibration comes into play.
I have one customer who requires that his 3 printers visually match
under a light-booth. He used to have 3 Epsons (7600 and 9600) in an
air-conditioned/humidity controlled room (where the ink and paper are
also stored) and he ended up re-calibrating the printers about twice
a day (with an ICColor and GMG). Now with GMG/HP Z2100 it's
automated, and every other day no calibration is performed - and they
have a better match than they ever did on the Epsons.
