No offense, but that's not usually good enough for most contract
proofing applications. An average dE2000 of .81 is probably closer to
1-1.2 dE76 and doesn't address peak dE numbers. With an average of 1
dE, you'd typically see max dE values of 3-5. For contract proofing,
I would expect to hold multiple printers to < .75 dE76 and < 2 dE
max.
Terry,
You didn't make it clear whether these expected deviations are
between the "multiple printers" (presumably the proofers) or between
the proofers and the standard reference (GRACoL, SWOP, whatever). The
former is easier than the latter, particularly if the various
printers all share the same ink type (e.g., Ultrachrome K3). We
should note, however, that we've found that doing no more than
installing a new ink cartridge can spike a change of 1 deltaE, as can
loading a paper made in a different run of the same brand. We could
also talk about things like ambient temperature stability, which can
vary a lot between printer locations. I'm also a little concerned by
the implications of a requirement(?) that multiple contract printers
be within .75 dE(76) overall. Other than the complications given
above, there is the question of how good is good enough where every
other link in the reproduction chain is incapable of anything close
to this constancy. Viewing booths, different human observers, and of
course, the entire offset printing process. As you know, even
profiling THAT is a matter of taking "optimal" performance averages,
and our reference profiles for proofing are at BEST just that. From a
practical point of view, keeping multiple proofers to the standard
you mention on a daily basis IS possible, but requires a degree of
intervention that is hardly ever done, and for good reasons relating
to time, cost, and, frankly, necessity. But those numbers do make for
good sales copy. mind you, I can get those numbers on the day I
perform the service, but when I turn my back...
