We are using Adobe CS3.
We have had some projects that have almost gone sour
because of images that seem to be doing some
conversion in Illustrator.
For instance, images that have a profile embedded in
them such as US Sheetfed Coated, that are mereley
linked in an Illustrator document with an untagged
profile, change color values from the original file
when postscpited and ran throuh Prinergy. When we
embedd the images in Illustrator rather than just link
the images,it seems to retain the integrity of values
of the original file OK.
When we postscript, we do not use a profile. We tell
Illustrator to keep the numbers.
I am just curiuos if any one knows why the images
would change when linking to them verses embedding
them.
Steve,
If you embed the image in the Illustrator document, then it is (at
the very least) assumed to be in the same color space as the
document. If the image were in a different color mode - say an RGB
image coming into a CMYK document - and you embedded, the image would
be converted based on your Color Settings. If you're using the North
American Prepress default color settings then the assumed document
profile is US Web Coated (SWOP) v2, and the CMYK Color Management
Policy is set to ignore linked profiles. This means that when you
embed the image the profile is effectively stripped out - and the
color numbers are preserved.
If you link the image, then the attached profile is still valid/
active. Now you have to alter your print settings to avoid an
unwanted color transform. Set the Color Management tab of the print
dialogue to "Let PostScript® printer determine colors". Then make
sure that your RIP is NOT performing any transforms. Actually, I
leave this set this way all the time, whether images are linked or
embedded.
If you have transparency in the file then a transform WILL occur. It
has to. The default color space from the Color Settings will be used
as the Transparency Flattening color space. So, if your image is
linked and is interacting with transparency it will be alterred.
