Yes, but one must also look forward: that investment can also be used both
for other displays and for future equipment. So, it all depends on how
serious-minded one is and how wide they want their options to be.

I have not used it, but from what I read, it has reduced capabilities
compared to the EyeOne Display 2:
<http://tinyurl.com/2bs6ag>
See page 3 of the PDF for a side-by-side feature comparison.
The document says that "if you later decide you want more advanced
functionality, you can easily upgrade your system to the i1Display 2 [...].
All you¹ll need to do is purchase an upgrade code to your software."
So, it seems that the colorimeter itself (hardware-wise) is no different
from the one you purchase with the EyeOne Display 2 package, but the
presence or absence of a software upgrade determines its functionalities.
One thing seems clear: you get less performance, compared to the EyeOne
Display 2. Which may be OK for a certain range of users. Meaning the ones
who'd rather save $60 (and possibly brag about it) than get a better
product... <g>
And, even worse, don't even know or care about the difference. *And*, when
they gain a bit of experience a while later and start noticing the product's
limitations, blame someone else (the manufacturers, the weather, the
planets, or too much coffee) for the poor results.
As for myself, when people ask me, I advise them to buy above a certain
"floor". They will not hear me advising them to buy a Huey or, likely, not
an EyeOne Display LT either. If that's what they want to buy, they're
welcome to do so of their own accord -- usually they have made up their
minds already and they are wasting my time asking me to validate their
choice, which I will not do.
