The lab in question assumes that oneself is doing the conversion,
they don't do anything to the data.
I dug out some sample prints (unmanaged TC8.7 RGB images) I had
done for a
photo lab, a while ago, and I did not observe any severe shifts of
"colors"
in the grayscales as I took the prints from fluorescents, to
tungsten to the
type of daylights you refered to above. Granted there were some
subtle and
expected shifts in the appearance of the grays. But never as
pinkish or
magentish as you reported.
I might add that even under 'northern light', the greys look very
slightly magenta-ish. This and the clearly noticeable cast under
fluorescent light has also just been confirmed by second pair of
eyes. Under incandescent light (billed as 3350 K) the greys,
particularly the whites look pretty neutral, the dark greys even a
bit warm.
Thanks again for giving the assurance that what I had been seeing was
not due to a grossly incompetent lab (or a grossly incompetent myself).
