At the risk of lengthening this discussion there are many different
definitions of metamerism. I kinda like the simplicity of this one
because of it's real world application and use with common end users:
From http://www.colorwiki.com
The phenomenon by which two materials that match under one
circumstance appear different to different viewers or under different
lighting. Metameric mismatch occurs when tristimulus values are the
same but spectral characteristics are not.
If you go into the full article you see that Chromix prefers the term
"Gray balance failure" for what Markus is talking about.
And there's Bruce Fraser's definition at http://www.creativepro.com/
story/feature/11132.html
Metamerism: The phenomenon where two color samples appear to match
under one light source, and differ under another. Two such samples
are called a metameric pair
It appears there is no consensus on a perfect definition. I think it
may be wise to stay focused on the message and not get caught up on
terminology absolutes.
