Scott,
I'm not the type that likes beating things to death for the pleasure of
beatin things to death -- I have better things to do in life as yourself and
everyone on this list. But allow me to dig the issue just a little further
as I'm always keen to learn something new whenever I can and further my
understanding of something I tought I already knew something about when it's
possible.
At issue, it seems to me, is not so much the perception of "two samples"
matching or mismatching each other under two or more light sources (as you
aptly described it in your post) but the perception of a "single sample"
changing in appearance as viewed under two or more light sources.
CIE Publication 15.2-1986, Section 5.2, page 35, describes metamerism in the
following way : "Two specimens having identical tristimulus values, XYZ, for
a given reference illuminant and reference observer are metameric if their
spectral radiance distributions differ within the visible spectrum".
Further, as Note 2 indicates, on page 36: "The Metamerism Index is not
suitable for determining the resultant colour shift or specifying the color
constancy of a "single" object colour when the illuminant is changed".
