Right. I agree. There are simply too many slight differences from one viewer
to the next when we ask them whether two colored objects match or not
(a.k.a., "observer metamerism"), and it's impossible to account for all of
them, or even a fraction. The only reasonable solution is to adopt a
"standard observer" (like the 2-degree one that the CIE defined in 1931),
which is a statistical abstraction created from a representative sample of
the general population.
The results will never delight *everyone*. But we can certainly (and more
realistically) aim for results that will displease the *smallest* possible
number of people -- and those results are probably created along the lines
of a statistical average.
