Hi Roger.
There is the fact that each DeltaE formula does reasonably well at gauging
color differences in certain portions of the visible range but not so well
in others. A lot of it depends on perceptual uniformity and how it's being
accounted for in a space like CIELAB that is not perceptually uniform.
The problems of finding a color difference formula that is well-formulated
and measures color differences evenly across CIELAB space is still not yet
quite resolved. DeltaE 2000 is a good step forward, but that too has its
limits. It's still an imperfect science, though that drawback certainly does
*not* make it useless.
It's when one is faced with the weak spots of DeltaE formulas that the
frustration becomes particularly palpable. But that goes with the territory
-- one of the things we have to adapt to and live with until something
better comes along.
