A magenta cast in a display's calibrated whitepoint is the sign to

Let me add one point to this discussion. Several people in this thread
have referred to a "cast". They have indicated that after calibration
and profiling their monitor has a magenta or yellow etc. "cast. What
are you using for a reference? Are you depending on your eyes or are
you referring to the CIELab standard observer? Remember viewer
metamerism. Are your eyes "standard"?
If you use multiple instruments and they each produce a different visual
"cast" then it sounds like you do not have good instrument consistency.
However, if all of your instruments produce the same cast, they may be
very consistent. In addition, they may be "accurate" with respect to
the standard observer.
The industry will never be able to move from art and craft, trial and
error, until we understand that color is a perception in our brain and
not an objective physical entity. We can measure the physical
parameters of pigments, light, and filters and image to a standard.
First, we need repeatability. Next we need accuracy. To achieve
accuracy, we need standards. You will never achieve accuracy using
human eyes. They do not all see alike. If you want to you can measure
your own personal bias from the standard and then you can image
consistently with your bias.
See an earlier thread for how I used to do this.
