Hello all,
sRGB and Gamma 2,2 are referenced in a bunch of international standards
for digital imaging.
( e.g. IEC 61966, several Video standards, W3C recommendations for color
display on web pages etc.)
The Mac Gamma of 1,8 in combination with non configurable
colormanagement settings in Mac OS X an several Apple applications is a
color management catastrophy.
Every professional Mac user in the digital imaging area, who wants to
work according open international standards must avoid Apple
applications or Mac OS X colormanagement on system level.
The best way to be compliant to international standards on Mac OS X is
to use applications, which use only the monitor profile specified in Mac
OS X and which completely ignore colormanagement on Mac OS X level.
But Apple makes it it quite hard for software vendors to avoid Mac OS X
system level colormanagement. Look e.g. at all the problems we have
currently in colormanagement for the print path with e.g. Adobe CS 3...
***
How it could be changed ?
***
I see the need for the ICC to define guidelines and testprocedures for
the colormanagement interaction of the OS, applications and printer
drivers according international standards. Please note, that the ICC is
now open for membership of individuals fo a fee which every serious
colormanagement consultant could pay.
Tom Lianza: I would be glad to see X-Rite leading such an initiative at
the ICC
(See You on the ICC GASIG list ?)
***
There are also several Open Source activities discussed at the OpenICC
mailinglist and the OpenICC wiki for transparent colormanagement between
OS and applications based on international open standards.
If Apple and Micosoft donĀ“t produce the colormanagement OS platform we
need, we should help the people willing to do this...
Tom Lianza: Sponsoring 4 or 5 Open Source Initiative with an i1 pro
would be very helpful. Also better solutions for using X-Rite
instruments under Linux are very welcome. Edmund Roalnd had discussed
this topic in detail with the relevant people form the LINUX
colormanagement community.
Regards
Jan-Peter

With
respect to the Mac, I
can't argue with his logic. Gamma 1.8 is Apple's
burden and it becomes
our burden as well.
Now Andrew, if you want to get rowdy and start
laying into marketing
folks, why not go up to Apple and tell them what
they need to do so we
can all use Gamma 2.2...
Regards,
Tom
I don't know if it will happen soon. I think it's
related to marketing and politics. I still remember
that iPhoto (6) would always assign CameraRGB
to any file with sRGB specified in its EXIF.
On the other hand, files with other colour space
specified in the EXIF's were respected.
Gamma 2.2 is PC. sRGB is PC. It may be too hard to
swallow by Apple.

Nipat
