Hi Karl,
I am not sure what "not even close" means. It probably means something
like a "match" with no tolerance specified in any kind of units.
I always refer to Bruce Lindbloom's site on the subject:
http://www.brucelindbloom.com/
Click on "Info" and then "Information About RGB Working Spaces". At the
bottom of the page is a full discussion on sRGB. You will notice in his
table that he says the gamma is approximately gamma 2.2.

I fully agree with the suggestion to make the system tonal response
curve selectable. At the same time Apple could reestablish the option
to select a system CMM like in OS X 10.3 – this could go into the same
preferences panel. Since not every application allows for selecting a
CMM (e.g. Quark) this would make Macs much more usable in their target
market "graphic arts".
One more thing on gammas: sRGB is NOT gamma 2.2, not even close! You
can easily see that when you assign sRGB to an image and the change to
a simplified sRGB like the one Photoshop (before 7) created when
saving the sRGB profile to file.

Jan-Peter,
I agree with you 100%: they owe it to their users to abandon 1.8.

It is the choice of Apple to serve the professional imaging community
and also the digital imaging prosumers by implementing international
standard for digital imaging correctly or to mess up their customers by
forcing them to a legacy Gamma of 1,8
