I know that IDEAlliance has begun a process of looking into "the
degree to
which of a given output system (press, mainly) can ever
successfully adopt
the G7 method" -- in other words, they are asking : is a given
press capable
of acceptable G7 behavior? Implying that some presses or processes
are in
such bad shape or pure shamble that any rational efforts at forcing
a G7
bahavior on them is doom to failure.
Nice research topic.

Are they?--didn't see that. As opposed to GRACoL and SWOP specs, G7
"behavior" relates only to curve shape: Given the maximum neutral CMY
and K densities of the printing system (which is not spec'd in G7)
there are certain ideal values for all the intervening values. After
adjusting densities on press the best one can the plate curves do the
rest---but you know this. If a press is so whacked that you can't hit
these marks pretty closely even with curves I wonder whether you can
do decent printing at all, in which case one might ask why the
printer has spent his money and time on G7 training/services rather
than on new blankets, rollers, etc.
