Hello Danny, Roger,
thank's for the pointers - I'll take a closer look at the products you
suggested.
Indeed I'm just interested in the in the "visible" range.
I don't have deep pockets - I guess I wont be a PhotoResearch customer
at this point.

Mark

This is called the "Near Field". Unless what you want to illuminate
is placed on the diffuser, the result will be different from what
you measure in the "Far Field", i.e. further away from the diffuser.
If you have deep pockets (single to multiple 10K$ side), you could
look at very expensive spectroradiometers instruments such as the
ones sold by PhotoResearch.
A more common choice is the i1 Pro from X-Rite/GretagMacbeth (1 to
1.5 K$). You could use it in emission mode to read the light coming
out of your diffuser and use it in Ambient mode, with the diffuser
to measure the far field. Of course, the measurement units are
different (Luminance vs Illuminance), but you could measure the
uniformity this way.
As a bonus with your i1, you get Display, Projector (optional), and
Printer calibration software (the exact software features depend on
the package you buy)!
And may I also suggest using the i1 Pro with BabelColor CT&A (from
my company), which would enable you to easily measure such data
(including spectral info) for up to nine points on your diffuser (or
display, or illumination plane). For more info, you can look in the
CT&A Help manual; look in the Spectral tools "Graphic Interface/ISO
3664+ tools" and Technical data/Spectral tools description/ISO 3664+
tools" sections..

Subject: Need buying advice on spectrophotometer
Hello color experts,
I'm looking for a device that will give me the spectral power
distribution for halogen and LED light sources. The light sources
are placed behind a diffusor - size is about 50x50mm. The halogen
lamps I'd like to test are either 35 or 50 watts. I'd also like to
measure the effect of various dichroic filters.
It would be nice to be able to sample a smaller area on the
diffusor so I can also get a rough idea about the homogeneity of
the illumination and if there are any SPD shifts at different
locations.
If the device has an LCD display that shows me the SPD that's
nice. More important would be a way to download recorded SPDs to
the computer (USB). Mac compatible software would be nice too.
I have zero knowledge about what devices are out there to help me
do this and would welcome some advice.
Thanks in advance.
Best regards
Mark
