Has anyone used SilverFast's AutoIT8? Any problems/issues?
You have to be aware that the created profiles provide an absolute
colorimetric rendering intent *only*, which means that luminosity will
not be expanded, and the scanned images will look "dull" by default.
The logic behind this is that clipping is definitely avoided this way,
while images are edited later on "anyhow", so the luminosity expansion
can be performed individually at his later stage ("auto contrast" or
whatever it's called); SilverFast offers the appropriate tools.
The second thing to be aware of is that SilverFast's profiles, more
than others, are dependent on the "correct" gamma setting for the
scanner, and it's not completely obvious what that is. In the Mac Life
test, gamma 2.0 (film scanner) and 2.4 (flatbed scanner) worked best,
but I don't know if you can make a general rule out of that. In any
case, avoid gamma values > 2.4, as SilverFast's profiling option
obviously does not like them.
Apart from these issues, profile quality is quite good, so if it's OK
for you to adjust the contrast of your scanned images explicitly later
on, this might be a good choice. Performing the profiling itself can't
get any simpler than with AutoIT8.
Bye
Uli
