Marco,
I'm going to take advantage of Graeme's yesterday replies when he wrote
that, if a device is well-behaved, a low patch count target flanked by some
form of Neugebauer approach could work very well. So, maybe that's what that
company in Europe was doing at the time. Their name is Pandora Color. I
found them here :

Unfortunately, there isn't much information to be garnered at the above
