Hi Chris and all,
In my experience with ink jet printers (13 years now) I have found that they
are way less susceptible to environmental fluctuations than laser devices,
this is because laser devices use electrostatic process to attract the toner
to the page and changes in temperature and humidity affect this process
quite considerably.
The Epson devices along with their inks seem to work well in almost all
within tolerance conditions and it is not something that I have noted to
affect my printers printer to date.
However my experience allows me to draw reference to two other manufactures
(both using Epson heads) and some of the issues that me and my clients have
experienced in low operating temperatures;
DuPont Artistry 2020, when the ambient temperature in the room is below 20
Celsius (35.6 F) the viscosity of the ink will create banding by not
allowing the ink to pass through the nozzles. This occurs with both Acid
Dye and Reactive Dye, however Reactive Dye seems to be the worst affected
(perhaps the viscosity is a little higher)
Roland printers running triangle ink (third party ink), this device also
when running in conditions under 20 Celsius exhibits the same issues as the
DuPont machine.
In regards to humidity this should be kept within tolerances for the stock
or you may see artificial 'dot gain' on your inkjet prints and Stephen is
correct always store your paper using best practices.
*** If you are using the Epson printer as a proofer the best practice is to
validate every proof produced by reading a media wedge with a
spectrophotometer and attach a printed 'PASS / FAIL' label. This way you
are not only supplying a guaranteed 'CONTRACT PROOF' but you are validating
that the proof is within acceptable Delta E tolerances and this will allow
you to breathe easy that you proofer is running well no matter what the
environmental conditions it is running in.***
In summery you should always try to keep your environmental conditions
within the recommended tolerances suggested by both the device and media
(paper) manufactures and *validate your proofs*
Kind regards,
Jason Hall
