At the risk of getting removed from Apple's Christmas card mailing list, I'd like to add my comments to this thread.

Shame on Apple!

It is simply inexcusable for vital functionality such as DDC/CI to just "not work" after an OS update, or even worse, to not even be implemented at all on new Apple hardware. With almost all "professional color" display monitor manufacturers, and many 3rd party calibration packages, relying on this technology to perform hardware color calibration in the display, Apple is really turning its back on the pro color and imaging market segment.

Granted, Apple displays do not use this functionality, and the VESA DDC/CI spec has holes large enough to fly a 747 through, but that is no excuse not to implement the basic support in the OS and minimally test it with 3rd party hardware.

Case and point: The Mini DisplayPort connector on the new MacBook and MacBook Pro does not currently implement DDC/CI functionality when using either the DisplayPort->VGA or the DisplayPort->DVI legacy adapters, even though support for DDC/CI over DisplayPort is clearly defined in the DisplayPort spec.

This means that anyone wanting to use a "smart" display with one of these new machines is out of luck for now. To ad further insult, it is possible to boot into Windows with BootCamp and use DDC/CI successfully with the DisplayPort->DVI adapter, so it is clearly a Mac OS issue, which was not fixed in OS 10.5.6. I really hate to even have to suggest to customers that they use Windows on their brand new Mac in order to accomplish what they need, but this is what it has come down to with new Mac hardware on this and several other occasions in the past.

In some cases it has taken Apple up to 18 months to fix some of these incompatibility issues. Lets hope this will not be the case with this new PPC+OS 10.5.6 issue or any of the new DisplayPort machines.

I have my fingers crossed that when Santa brings me the long awaited DisplayPort->Dual-link DVI adapter, so I can finally connect a 30" display to my new MacBook, I can just plug it in and magically everything will work. The same wish applies for any new hardware that Apple may (or may not) be introducing at MacWorld.

I live in hope anyway.

I should note that these are my personal opinions and observations, and do not necessarily represent those of my employer, NEC Display Solutions.

Best regards

Will Hollingworth
