I'd side with William here.

In general, I think someone should send Apple a test device to check
that I2c over the video connector is ok, with the usual adaptors.
Sending the same device to M$ and the graphics vebdors might help too.
Of course the fact that I just built such a device a few weeks ago
might color my views :)
