Mark,
I don´t quite understand, why OS X should deteriorate in this case
even compared with Windows on the same hardware platform after the
move to a dual platform architecture. I don´t think that DDC/CI
compliance is something that is better suited to "the other" platform.
All those who advocate for a USB connection: DO you really want an
increase in the number of proprietary formats for driving different
monitor models/makes? Or who do you think will come up with a standard
for a USB monitor interface?
There is an existing standard, may it be as whacky as it is; there is
an organisation responsible for this standard. I think we should all
try to convice those who are responsible that it is also their
responsibility to fix what´s broken and enforce what´s working.
Otherwise I fear that software manufacturers will support only those
hardware manufacturers who are friendly enough to publish their
interface information or SDKs.
Merry Christmas and a succesful New Year,

Not to side-track the discussion into an OS sling-fest, but all
these "inconveniences" you list were anticipated and expected at the
time Apple decided to offer a dual-platform architecture, because
they know the diversity would appeal to many people who use
applications that are better suited to or only useable on the one or
the other. Their sales figures seem to justify the decision they
made. There's no free lunch. More flexibility = a few extra steps
and bucks. This is the single recent feature change on the Mac
offering which seriously tempts me the buy a Mac when I'm ready to
up-grade from my Dell 690 Precision Workstation (state of the art
Windows machine in late 2006).
