The HP5000 is of a totally different generation than any of the current
printers, so you'll be in for a generation gap no matter what new machine you
choose. This will manifest as both the inconvenience of learning a new workflow and
new settings, but also as the wow factor of enjoying the improved print
quality, especially for B&W. But moving from dye to pigment may cause a few
disappointments as well.
Yes, you can use custom profiles (and get great custom profile results) with
the iPF5100-9100 printers. Problems with the native drivers have been much
reduced from the initial iPF5000-9000 models. There is also the option of using a
direct export module from Photoshop, which for those printing single images
is a convenient option. It needs to be profiled seperately, however. You can
definately print photographic images, including color, tinted black and white,
and neutral black and white directly through the drivers and export modules to
these printers without the use of a RIP. What layout, speed, and nesting
conveniences you might achieve from a RIP is a seperate issue.
The reduced color metamerism from having secondary as well as primary ink
colors, the reduced grayscale metamerism from having multiple gray inks, and the
reduced gloss differential over older pigment printers would all be true of
both the Canon iPFs and the HP Z3100 printers. The X880 Epson series would offer
all of these advantages except for the secondary ink colors, and with the
notable disadvantage (and expense) of having to change black ink carts to move
from matte to gloss or luster media.
