Hi Mark,

I can really appreciate what you're trying to do here as I've been down part of this road myself. Some questions for you to ponder:

* Do you think *gray balance* is the holy grail of linearization techniques? I did some experiments a couple of years ago showing that it was no better than other techniques. Based on what I know *today*, I think a "delta e" or L*a*b*-based linearization are as good as anything, at least as good as a strict neutral gray lin.

* Why include UCR/GCR in the mix? Why not simply get to a C-M-Y neutral gray linearization and add the K later, via profiling? I think it would be a lot of work to develop a linearization routine that would also include K generation.

* As far choosing ink limit and such, I agree that RIPs that have you evaluate bleeding points, densities and the like is a bit crude. I'm pretty satisfied that looking at things colorimetrically, via L*, chroma, hue angle etc. is a much better technique. What I'd like to see is an ink limiting technique or even a linerization technique that was based on secondaries instead of just looking at primaries. Secondary colors are arguably more important in photographic terms than primary colors.

Just some thoughts,
Terry Wyse

Hi David - I don't mind looking at it for the artifacts that you mentioned,
but I have observed that different "eyeballs" or users will choose any of up
to 10 points that appear to have similar densities and no bleeding, but
actually have different measurable values. This is where the inaccuracies
start. I would rather view the image, choose a "bleading point", and then
have the computer show me a graph of density, and calculate some aim point
targets for all four colors based on a choice of UCR, GCR, etc. THEN we
should calculate the linearization.
