The PDF output in InDesign is untrustworthy.
In *this* particular instance, yes, but it's unfair of you to
generalize. I,
for one, always export direct from PDF and never, never have I
experienced
the kind of bugs that you encountered, Martin, never.
I've just Googled to see if anybody else has found a similar problem
and came across this:

Which looks to be a related problem that doesn't require distorted
CMYK bitmaps like mine.
Have you checked every PDF that you've produced for changes of
alignment in the image positions that are in the region of 0.905 pts?
The alignment problems in my files were easy to spot because it
disrupted the overall outline of the non-bleed borders.
But now I'm thinking about how many other ads have hit the presses
with the images slightly offset because we created them directly from
InDesign rather than Distiller?
